My activities at the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education

by Andrew Hodges

The Department of Continuing Education at Oxford University organises courses and lectures which are open to all.

In recent years I have contributed in various different ways to its events and courses, and there may be further events in the future if there is sufficient demand. You can email me to find out more, or contact the Department directly. I should warn you that these activities represent the ruthlessly commercial arm of my operations, so that you will have to pay a fee to take advantage of them.

International Programmes:
UC Berkeley Extension

In summer 2002 I gave a three-week interdisciplinary course in the International Programmes division. This was in conjunction with University of California at Berkeley Extension, as part of the Berkeley/Oxford Program. The title was Breaking the Code: then and now. The course was based on my book Alan Turing: the enigma, with discussions, visits and other activities relating its subject-matter to modern developments.

The course included a guided tour of the
Bletchley Park Museum.

Computer-based Cryptology

From 1999 to 2002 I gave introductory courses on cryptology. The Department has however decided not to continue offering this subject.

Diploma in Computing

From 1999 to 2001 I gave some assistance to this two-year course in elementary computer science, which is conducted almost entirely through the Internet.

I also continue to act as tutor in computability, cryptology, and Artificial Intelligence, for the more traditional weekly class form of this course.

  • 3-4 June 2000: Cryptography Past and Present

I organised a weekend conference on this theme.

  • 5-6 February 2000: Philosophy of Mind and Machine

I gave two talks to this weekend conference, introducing the ideas of Roger Penrose who was also speaking.
